Fitting a plug & play Mercedes AMG steering wheel: the complete guide

L'équipe Wheelz · 02 July 2026 · 2 min de lecture

On most recent Mercedes, replacing the steering wheel is a plug & play job. Your Wheelz steering wheel arrives complete — airbag, touch controls and paddles already fitted: it plugs straight into the original connectors. No programming, no diagnostic tool. Allow 30 to 45 minutes with the right tools.

What you need

  • A set of Torx bits (the airbag is usually removed with Torx)
  • A socket to match the central bolt of the steering wheel
  • A torque wrench for refitting
  • 30 to 45 minutes of quiet

Safety: the airbag calls for method

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 10 to 15 minutes before touching the steering wheel. The capacitors in the restraint system must discharge fully. Always handle an airbag with the cushion facing away from you, and never place it face down. At the slightest doubt, hand the job to a professional.

Step 1 — Prepare the vehicle

Wheels perfectly straight, ignition off — the steering wheel is then at neutral, so there is no need to mark anything. Steering unlocked if your model allows it. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait the required time.

Step 2 — Remove the original airbag

On most Mercedes, the airbag is held by two Torx screws reached from the back of the steering wheel, one on each side. Turn the wheel slightly to reach each screw, insert the bit squarely into its housing and undo them fully (they often stay captive in their housing), then bring the wheel back to straight. The airbag then comes away from the wheel — hold it during the operation.

Step 3 — Unplug the connectors

Behind the airbag you will find the cushion and horn connectors. Lift the coloured safety locks with a fingernail or a small screwdriver, then remove the plugs without ever pulling on the wires. Set the original airbag aside. Then unplug the steering wheel control connectors.

Step 4 — Remove the original steering wheel

With the wheels straight, the steering wheel is at neutral. Undo the central bolt, then free the wheel with a firm movement towards you while guiding the cables through the opening.

Step 5 — Fit your Wheelz steering wheel

Offer up your Wheelz steering wheel perfectly straight, wheels still at neutral, and engage it on the splines. Reconnect the airbag and integrated control connectors until the locks click, then tighten the central bolt to the manufacturer's torque. Check that nothing is pinched.

Step 6 — Check

Reconnect the battery, ignition on without starting the engine: the airbag warning light comes on then goes out after a few seconds. Test the horn, the controls and the paddles.

Frequently asked questions

Is programming required?

No. Our Mercedes steering wheels arrive ready to plug in — the vehicle detects no change. It is plug & play on most models.

Is everything included?

Yes. Your Wheelz steering wheel is delivered complete: airbag, touch controls and paddles already fitted. Nothing extra to buy, nothing to salvage from your old wheel.

The airbag light stays on?

Most often, a plug is not fully locked. With the battery disconnected, check each connector again. If the problem persists, write to us: we reply within 24 hours.
