Fitting a plug & play Audi Sport steering wheel: the complete guide
On most recent Audis, changing the steering wheel is a plug & play job well within reach of a careful home mechanic. Your Wheelz steering wheel arrives complete — airbag, multifunction controls and paddles already fitted: it plugs straight into the original connectors. No coding, no diagnostic session. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
What you need
- A thin flat-blade screwdriver or a rigid metal rod
- A multi-point socket to match the central bolt of the steering wheel
- A torque wrench for refitting
- 30 to 45 minutes, without rushing
Safety: the airbag calls for method
Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal, then wait 10 to 15 minutes. That delay allows the capacitors in the restraint system to discharge fully. Carry an airbag with the cushion facing away from you, and never place it face down. If in doubt at any step, call on a professional.
Step 1 — Prepare the vehicle
Wheels straight, ignition off — the steering wheel is then at neutral, so there is no need to mark anything. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait. Lay out your tools and keep your new steering wheel within reach.
Step 2 — Remove the original airbag
On most Audis, the airbag is held by spring clips reached through the holes at the back of the steering wheel. Turn the wheel a quarter turn to reach the first hole, insert the screwdriver and push the spring firmly: that side of the airbag releases. Repeat on the other side, then bring the wheel back to straight. Hold the airbag with one hand as the last clip releases.
Step 3 — Unplug the connectors
Release the safety tabs on the airbag connectors (never pull on the wires), unplug the horn connector, then set the original airbag aside, cushion facing up. Then disconnect the multifunction controls and the paddles.
Step 4 — Remove the original steering wheel
With the wheels straight, the steering wheel is at neutral. Undo the central multi-point bolt, then pull the wheel towards you with a steady movement while guiding the cables through the hub.
Step 5 — Fit your Wheelz steering wheel
Offer up your Wheelz steering wheel perfectly straight, wheels still at neutral, and push it fully home onto the splines. Reconnect the integrated airbag, control and paddle connectors, then tighten the central bolt to the manufacturer's torque with the torque wrench.
Step 6 — Check
Reconnect the battery, ignition on without starting the engine: the airbag warning light should go out after a few seconds. Test the horn, the controls and the paddles. Done.
