Fitting a plug & play BMW steering wheel: the complete guide

Good news: on most recent BMWs, replacing the original steering wheel with a Wheelz one is a plug & play job. No coding, no diagnostic tool, no electrical modification. What you need

• A thin flat-blade screwdriver (or a rigid metal rod)
• A socket to match the central bolt of your steering wheel (usually E-Torx or Torx depending on the year)
• A torque wrench for refitting
• 30 to 45 minutes, without rushing

Safety: the airbag calls for method

Before doing anything, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes. That delay gives the capacitors in the restraint system time to discharge fully. Never place an airbag face down, and always carry it with the cushion facing away from your body. If you have any doubt at any step, hand the job to a professional — it will take them under an hour.

Step 1 — Prepare the vehicle

Set the wheels perfectly straight with the ignition off — the steering wheel is then in its neutral position, so there is no need to mark anything. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 10 to 15 minutes. Use that time to lay out your tools and unpack your new steering wheel.

Step 2 — Remove the original airbag

On most BMWs, the airbag is held by two metal springs reached through two small holes at the back of the steering wheel, left and right. Turn the wheel slightly to reach the first hole, insert the flat screwdriver and push the retaining spring: that side of the airbag releases with a small click. Repeat on the other side, then bring the wheel back to straight. The airbag now lifts away from the wheel — hold it with your free hand.

Step 3 — Unplug the connectors

Behind the airbag you will find the connectors (airbag and horn). Gently release the coloured safety tabs before pulling on the plugs — never on the wires. Set the original airbag aside, cushion facing up. Then unplug the multifunction control connectors if your model has them.

Step 4 — Remove the original steering wheel

With the wheels straight, the steering wheel is at neutral. Undo the central bolt, then pull the wheel towards you with a firm, steady movement. Guide the cables through the hub opening so nothing gets pinched.

Step 5 — Fit your Wheelz steering wheel

Offer up your Wheelz steering wheel perfectly straight, wheels still at neutral, and push it fully home onto the splines of the shaft. Reconnect the airbag and integrated control connectors until the safety tabs click, then tighten the central bolt to the manufacturer's torque with the torque wrench.

Step 6 — Check

Reconnect the battery and switch on the ignition without starting the engine: the airbag warning light should come on for a few seconds and then go out. Test the horn, the steering wheel controls and the paddles. You are done.
